“It is a tremendous opportunity for these 374 families who are going to live in a luxurious space, beautiful for children, for the elderly, for families. This is such a positive thing.”
With great pride, city officials, together with the developers of Park Tower, made official the opening of 35 Commercial Street, on the waterfront of the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn, a new apartment building that will be permanently affordable.
“35 Commercial Street is a prime example of what permanent affordable housing can and should be in New York City. Units are available to New Yorkers earning between 30 and 110% AMI (area median income) and studio rents at the 30% AMI level start at just over $400 a month,” said Marian Klein, president of Park Tower Group.
The property is part of an affordable housing project in the city that was born a decade ago thanks to a public-private alliance. It has 22 floors and 374 apartments.

“Once completed, this lush, tree-covered development will eventually open its doors to 5,500 New Yorkers,” reads a social media message from the Housing Preservation and Development Agency.

The building’s design includes an arched brick threshold entry along Commercial Street with hand-painted signage, leading to one of three private landscaped courtyards for residents.
The community invites all residents to apply regardless of their social status.
“We have to do that, these types of projects hundreds of times. And that is our commitment. And that is why we are working, so hard for the legislature, to try to pass the necessary laws, the necessary authorities that we can build throughout the city,” explained Adolfo Carrión, commissioner of the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
Carrion.
According to project leaders, 57 of the apartments will be for people who did not have a home.
New residents began moving in since September of last year and to date have received 90,000 applications from interested individuals and families.
“Every person deserves a place to call home, with the support they need to thrive. 57 formerly homeless households at 35 Commercial Street will have access to ongoing social services provided by @BrGround and assistance furnishing their new home,” it reads in another message on social networks from the Housing Department.
