Chinese scientists identified a number of new viral genomes in bats. Among others are RpYN06 which is called 94.5 percent identical to SARS-CoV-2, the Corona virus that causes it COVID-19.
The findings were reported in the pre-print journal biorxiv.org, by researchers from Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, China.
The researchers said, RpYN06 is the closest relative to the Corona COVID-19 virus. But so far, no viruses have been found in bats that have the exact same spike protein as SARS-CoV-2.
In their report, the researchers looked at 411 samples collected from 23 species of bats in Yunnan province between 2019 and 2020. Of the 24 genomes obtained, 4 were related to SARS-CoV-2 and 3 related to SARS-CoV.
Bats have been known as hosts or hosts for various viruses that can trigger disease in humans. The scientists also predict the emergence of a new disease from the animals they call ‘Disease-X‘.
