AND CHOICE OF JUDGES
Three Supreme Court judges entered the fray for the SC – one from each of its colleges. They are vice-president Yevgeny Staykov, who heads the College of Commerce, Galina Toneva, who is from the Criminal College, and Svetlana Kalinova from the Civil College.
As a result of a gentleman’s agreement between the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Appeal, this time it is the turn of the Supreme Court of Cassation to appoint a representative. And although the three nominations are from the Supreme Court, in reality the Supreme Court will have a majority. 180 Chief Justices were present – 87 from the Supreme Court and 93 from the Supreme Court. Two of them voted with invalid votes in the first round. In the first round, Toneva received 79 votes, followed by Kalinova with 59 votes, and Staykov – 40. Thus, Toneva and Kalinova reached a runway, which Toneva won with 94 to 81 votes.
The balance of power between the two high courts could have been different if the SJC had not stopped the contest for 16 seats at the last minute. The difference in the Runoff was 13 votes. (See more on the subject here.)
