If it weren’t for Covid, now we would all be worried about the upcoming seasonal flu. Colds, coughs, febrile states, are typical evils of this season and many fight them with the flu vaccine.
But others choose to treat flu states with antibiotics instead. Very wrong. Never take these medicines to treat colds, coughs and flu. All doctors say so.
To combat the flu, the main road is the vaccine
This year will be a different autumn and winter than other years, due to the coronavirus pandemic. And it is already known that for now the flu vaccines will not be enough for everyone. At least in the first part of the season. There will be only for the classes most at risk, such as the elderly, doctors, nurses, children. Adults who do not fall into this category will have to wait.
So how to fight the flu, cough, cold, fever? It is likely that do-it-yourself treatments will be triggered, although it is only the intervention of a doctor to authorize the best, most effective and most suitable treatments for us, as we all know. It remains important to understand, however, which solution they should all discard. In case of flu, fever, cough, cold, doctors strongly advise against the use of antibiotics.
The ASL of Teramo has invented a slogan to make the population understand that the antibiotic is a medicine to be taken only in particular cases.
Never take these medicines to treat colds, coughs and flu
Some time ago the Local Health Authority of Abruzzo spread an information campaign with a catchphrase throughout the province. The campaign slogan read: With the flu or a cold, no antibiotics please.
The goal was to make it clear that the only way to treat winter flu is with the vaccine.
The antibiotic is capable of fighting serious infections, some fatal, but it is not suitable for fighting the flu virus. Its abuse strengthens the resistance of bacteria, which therefore become less attackable by antibiotics.
With the incorrect use of antibiotics, a bacterial strain can develop resistance to the antibiotic by genetic mutation. When a person catches an infection caused by one of these bacteria, healing becomes more difficult.
Yet, according to statistics, 51% of Italians think antibiotics are effective against colds. In addition, 10% of the population takes them without a prescription. So, if you have flu symptoms, like cold, cough, fever, don’t take any antibiotics. Not only will it not help you, but it can be counterproductive.
