Never in eight years have so few companies been founded as last quarter | NOW

In the third quarter of 2020, 16 percent fewer companies were founded than in the same period last year. This represents the largest decrease in eight years, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Monday.

A lot fewer new businesses were started up in the hospitality industry in particular. In this sector, the number of business startups decreased by 35 percent compared to last year.

There were also more than 30 percent fewer registrations at the trade register within the culture, sports and recreation sector and in education.

On the other hand, almost 50 percent more web shops were established.

These developments can largely be attributed to the corona crisis. In the first quarter of this year there was still an increase in the number of start-ups: 13 percent.
