Never been worse

China has had one of the toughest corona regimes in the world since the virus was discovered in the country in December 2019. But infection numbers have never been worse than they are right now, writes BBC.

Over 30,000

Although they have maintained a string of strict restrictions for several years, the surge in infections is now at a new peak. 31,527 new cases of the infection were registered on Wednesday. The previous daily record is from April and was 28,000 infected.

Officially, only 5,200 of China’s population of 1.4 billion have died from the coronavirus. The official death toll in relation to population is a thousand times higher in the United States, although there is great uncertainty related to the Chinese figures.

The outbreak will now center around the capital Beijing and southern China.

Big protests

The draconian crown regime has led to recent protests and some softening by the Chinese authorities. In early November, the quarantine period for close contacts was reduced from seven days in a state institution to fewer days at home. However, the new outbreak will lead to further tightening in the coming days, according to the British broadcaster.

Among the coronavirus protests that have received international attention in recent weeks have occurred at the world’s largest iPhone factory run by the Foxconn company. It ended with clashes between the factory workers, who suffered a prolonged blockade, and the police.
