The film about Nevenka, who was a councillor in Ponferrada, will be released on September 27 in Spanish cinemas
The film I am Nevenkadirected by Icíar Bollaín, will be released in theaters on September 27. The film tells the story of Nevenka Fernández, who in 2000 was a councilor for Finance in the City Council of Ponferrada and reported the then mayor, Ismael Álvarez, for sexual harassment.
The announcement was made via a video posted on the Instagram account @iciarbollain_soynevenka, which also highlights that Bollaín will compete for the Golden Shell at the prestigious San Sebastian Film Festival.
The film, described as “a powerful story of denunciation and courage,” exposes the persecution suffered by Fernández after making her complaint public. Despite her courage, much of Ponferrada society turned its back on her, supporting the accused mayor.
Curiously, the exterior scenes of the film were not shot in Ponferrada, but in various locations in the province of Zamora, which has generated some expectation about the visual representation of the city in this film production.
