Neurobiologist Brankele Frank suffered a burnout twice and investigated what really happens in your body and head. She talks to Pieter van der Wielen about how long-term stress and the associated substance cortisol actually change our brains. That not only (work) pressure but also genes, upbringing and beliefs play an important role in susceptibility to burnout complaints. How she needed infinite patience in her own search for recovery and learned to handle energy and active relaxation meticulously. And the ultimate key to a large part of her recovery: learning to feel and embrace her emotions and other signals from the body. “We have come to see our brain and cognition as capital that we have to use, which alienates us from our body.”
