Elon Musk has a lot of interesting projects and one of them is Neuralink. The aim of this project is to develop an interface that would be able to recognize signals from the brain at such a level that it would allow, for example, paralyzed people to walk again, or at least control electronic devices, which should facilitate communication with the outside world. But before technology gets to that stage, it needs to be tested on simpler tasks. That is the need to play Pong with the mind.
Neuralink tried and successfully. The object studied was the Pager macaque, which first received a joystick to help it get a dot on the screen into the space of an orange square. He was rewarded with a banana smoothie and it’s no wonder he gradually improved a lot. His two implants in the brain (on the right and left side controlling the motor) then wirelessly sent data for analysis, so that it was possible to translate individual signals into specific movements. The data could also be accessed using an iPhone application. Eventually, we switched to classic Pong, the joystick was removed, and Pager had no choice but to think about how he would play the game, where he would move in it. The sweet rewards remained and according to the video, Pager became a surprisingly good Pong player.
