Neukölln District Plans to Cut Social Measures Due to Lack of Funding

The district of Neukölln plans to cancel numerous social measures – and assigns responsibility for this to the Senate Administration. In the years 2024 and 2025, among other things, homeless aid should be reduced, security guards at a dozen schools canceled, water playgrounds and youth and family centers closed, as the district announced on Wednesday. This is what a benchmark resolution for the budget for the next two years provides.

Furthermore, broken playground equipment should no longer be replaced and waste disposal in green areas should be halved. The Alt-Rixdorfer Christmas market should also be omitted.

Financial planning will “destroy social infrastructure in Neukölln”

“Following the allocation by the Senate, the district office of Neukölln is missing 22.8 million euros per year for the budget years 2024/2025 in order to maintain the status quo,” it said. “With the benchmark decision, the district office is therefore forced to reduce or completely eliminate numerous social offers that are necessary for Neukölln and that are of great importance to the people in the district.”

The reason is the lack of financial resources for the districts by the Senate administration. “The Senate’s financial plans will destroy the social infrastructure in Neukölln for many years to come,” said district mayor Martin Hikel. “This puts trust in the state’s ability to act at risk.”

The district office had to decide on the following savings

No security guards at 12 schools in Neukölln No daily cleaning at the Neukölln schools Aid for the homeless will be reduced Elimination of outreach addiction help Water playgrounds will be closed Broken playground equipment on playgrounds will no longer be replaced Waste disposal in green areas will be halved Closing of three youth leisure and family facilities Reduction in district coordination from 2025 for youth trips Young people who are particularly affected are no longer funded. Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market is no longer available
