This winter, the Netherlands will send Ukraine about 6 million euros of materials to repair energy infrastructure. This includes transformers, switching components and cables. The energy grid has been damaged by Russian bombing, making it increasingly difficult for the Ukrainians.
Part of the Ukrainian population is regularly without water, electricity or heating. Residents are having an even harder time now that temperatures are dropping.
Meanwhile, the country is grappling with a shortage of materials for the necessary repairs. “With these emergency deliveries, we want to continue helping Ukraine, so that much-needed repairs can continue as well as possible,” says Minister Rob Jetten (Climate and Energy).
The Dutch cabinet has allocated a total of 180 million euros “to help Ukraine get through the winter”, the ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs write in a joint message. 10 percent of this goes towards restoring vital infrastructure. It also includes the 6 million euros spent on materials for the electricity grid.
Exactly where the materials will go and when they will be sent, the ministries do not reveal “for security reasons”.
