The 28-year-old Rijpma-de Jong had to acknowledge her superiority in the Norwegian winner Ragne Wiklund. The world champion in the 3,000 beat multiple Olympic and world champion Martina Sáblíková in her ride and set a track record of 4:01.88. Japan’s Momoka Horikawa came second with a time of 4:03.42.

For Rijpma-de Jong it is the second medal at the first World Cup competition. She finished second on Saturday in the 1,500 meters, the distance for which she is the reigning world champion. She was allowed to start in the 3,000 meters due to the cancellation of, among others, Irene Schouten.

The Netherlands takes gold on the first mixed redemption

Wesly Dijs and Femke Kok took victory in the first edition of the mixed gender relay, the mixed relay. That required a disqualification. The two skaters had finished second behind Canada, but that country was removed from the results due to interference.

In the mixed relay, four teams of two skaters enter the lane simultaneously in a ride over 2,500 meters. First the four skaters complete a lap, then with a push they give the turn to a skater who takes care of two laps. After the second relay, the skaters ride two laps and then the skater takes care of the final lap.

Dijs crashed in the final sprint with Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu from Canada. He crossed the finish line in second place behind the Canadian and immediately indicated that he had been hindered. Canada was disqualified and with a time of 2.55.53, Dijs and Kok also stayed ahead of the skaters in the other stages. Poland came second and the United States third.
