Netherlands: five letter bombs were sent to companies, one exploded

Five letter bombs were sent during the week to companies in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam, Dutch police said on Thursday.

An envelope would have exploded, according to the newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad, without specifying the target or if the detonation had caused victims. These letters can cause serious injuries, according to the police. They were sent to a hotel and petrol station in Amsterdam, a real estate agency in Utrecht, as well as a petrol station and an automobile company in Rotterdam. The headquarters of the Central Collection Office (CIB) was also targeted Thursday in Rotterdam.

All letters are from the same person, although the CIB is indicated as the issuer.

The police asked not to open the missives to the logo of the collection agency which would present a bulge.

The letters are analyzed by the Dutch Forensic Institute. Defense explosives experts were also mobilized for the investigation.

The police are leaning over an extortion case. The terrorist motif does not seem to have been accepted.
