The size of our country’s economy last year amounted to 1,033 billion euros. It was the first time that the Netherlands exceeded 1 trillion euros, according to figures from statistics agency CBS.
It meant a doubling in more than twenty years. In 2002 we exceeded 0.5 billion euros for the first time. Since then, the size of our economy has increased every year, with the exception of the years 2009 and 2020. This was due to the credit crisis and the corona crisis respectively.
After 2020, the Dutch economy grew considerably for several years. This was mainly due to the recovery after the corona crisis. High inflation also played a role.
The Netherlands is the eighteenth largest economy in the world. The United States and China are by far the largest. To illustrate: the American economy is more than 25 times larger than ours. Within the European Union we are number five, after Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Only small growth last year
If we only look at the volume of the economy – i.e. regardless of price changes – there was hardly any growth last year. There was a plus of only 0.1 percent compared to the previous year.
Governments and consumers spent more, but international trade – an important pillar of the Dutch economy – performed poorly last year. Both exports and imports shrank, partly because the industry was not doing well.
