This year, the Netherlands is again outside the top twenty of the international list of the most LGBTIQ+-friendly travel destinations. Our country did increase compared to 2023, but was consistently in the top five in the ten years before that.
The Netherlands is in 21st place in the 2024 edition, which was published on Friday. It is a small increase compared to 2023, when the Netherlands was in 24th place.
The index uses several criteria, including anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality and adoption rights for same-sex partners. It also looks at the ban on conversion therapy, social acceptance and other factors that influence the experiences of LGBTQ+ travelers.
In addition to the Netherlands, other European countries such as the United Kingdom and Belgium have also dropped out of the top twenty. Spain, Portugal, Canada, Malta and New Zealand are doing well. These countries make up the top five this year.
The bottom positions on the list are occupied by Russia, Uganda, Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. In Russia, the situation for the LGBTQ+ community has deteriorated significantly in the past year.
