The Dutch will also have used more clean energy in 2022 than the year before. The use of solar panels in particular is on the rise. Biomass is actually burned less and gas consumption – which is not sustainable – has also fallen considerably. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands.
In total, we used 1,850 petajoules of energy in the Netherlands last year. That was 7 percent less than one year previously. This is mainly because we have burned less natural gas. Less of this was available, because Russia largely turned off the tap to Europe.
Much of that gas consumption has not been replaced. We have simply become more economical, for example because we have lowered the thermostat.
Of the 1,850 petajoules we used last year, 277 petajoules came from sustainable sources. That is 6 percent more than the year before. That increase is largely due to solar and wind energy, which grew by 45 and 13 percent respectively.
The largest contribution to sustainable energy still comes from biomass. It is clear that this source is under pressure. Its use fell by 15 percent last year. This is partly due to the fact that less co-firing was used at power stations last year.
The consumption of biogasoline and heat pumps also increased last year, while we actually put less biodiesel in the tank.
