Netgear comes with the Orbi 5G mesh system, which consists of a router and a single satellite. It concerns the Orbi AX4200 router that the company released earlier, to which 5G support has now been added. Separate satellites can be added.
It Orbi 5G meshsysteem is a triband version with a 2.4GHz band and two 5GHz bands. The mesh router has Wi-Fi 6 support and a maximum bandwidth of 4.2Gbit/s, which is achieved through 600Mbit/s on 2.4GHz and 1200Mbit/s and 2400Mbit/s on the two 5GHz bands. The individual nodes support 2×2-mu-mimo and a wireless 5GHz backhaul is provided.
According to Netgear, the system works over 5G with all service providers via a suitable nano-SIM card, which customers must purchase separately. A speed of up to 1 Gbit/s would be possible, although the manufacturer does point out that there must be good 5G coverage. Users are also dependent on the maximum speed that providers offer on 5G.
The Orbi router has a gigabit WAN port and three gigabit Ethernet connections. There are also two Ethernet connections on the satellite. Both the router and the satellite are equipped with a soc with four cores at 1.4GHz. The router contains 1GB of RAM and 512MB of flash memory.
Netgear says the system is capable of providing Wi-Fi coverage for an area of 350 square meters and can connect up to 40 devices. Coverage can be expanded by adding additional satellites; per piece, a maximum range of 175 m² is added.
The Orbi 5G mesh system consisting of the router and the single satellite is the NBK752 variant. That package will soon be available in the Benelux. In the United States this combination already available for a price of $1100. An extra single satellite, the RBS750 variant, costs $200, although packages with multiple satellites are also offered, with the price per satellite going down. It is still unknown what euro prices Netgear will ask.
