Netflix Wins Lawsuit Over Panama Papers Movie | Entertainment

entertainment">Lawyers Jurgen Mossack and Ramon Fonseca have been litigating Netflix for years over the film starring Meryl Streep. The Laundromat, about the international Panama Papers scandal that uncovered a large-scale investigation into suspicious offshore accounts of public figures would slander them. The lawyer duo initially tried to stop the release of the film, in which they are portrayed by Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas, but The Laundromat was just released in the autumn of 2019.

entertainment">Mossack and Fonseca argue in their lawsuit that they are portrayed in The Laundromat as “ruthless, heartless attorneys involved in money laundering, tax evasion, bribery and other criminal activities.” However, the judge ruled that they are never directly associated with crime in the film, but at most it is suggested that the offshore accounts they created were used for criminal activity. “This,” the judge said, “is not untrue.”

entertainment">In his judgment, the judge also stated that he does not consider it likely that viewers of the film will experience it as factual, certainly not because Netflix shows a message before and after the film from which it must be clear that it is a dramatized version of the scandal.

entertainment">Despite the verdict, the lawsuit is not completely over: two other charges, about copyright and misleading promotion, are being heard in another court.
