Esports News: Netflix, the world’s most popular movie and series streaming platform, is reported to be “expanding” into the video game industry in 2022.
As quoted by Esports ID from Bloomberg, Netflix plans to add video games to its service next year. To realize this ambition they have now recruited Mike Verdu, a former executive at Electronic Arts (EA) and Facebook as vice president of game development, who will serve under the auspices of Chief Opetating Officer (COO) Greg Peters.
Mike Verdu is known to have previous experience working in the development of a number of well-known EA games such as The Sims, Star Wars, to Plant vs. Zombies, and was COO for Zynga Inc. period 2009 and 2012.
Netflix’s expansion into the gaming world has actually been planned since 2019. At that time, Fortnite was at the peak of its popularity and they loved them, so they took the initiative to try out the video game industry. Even last May, the platform also approached a number of game industry experts to recruit them.
Whereas previously, this OTT media had also launched two video game-themed series, namely DOTA: Dragon’s Blood (Dota), The Witcher Series, and League of Legends: Arcane (League of Legends) which will air soon.
It is not yet clear whether their full plan in the video game industry is to make online games and esports only or follow Steam as a video game distribution platform.
But interestingly, as reported by ONE Esports, after Bloomberg reported the news, Netflix shares immediately rose by 3.3% to US $ 566, an increase of 1.3% this year, at the close of Wednesday (14/7).
