Netflix suffers massive cancellation of subscribers after donating $7 million to Kamala Harris’ campaign – Diario La Página – 2024-10-01 21:53:24

Netflix cancellations spiked after its co-founder and president, Reed Hastings, endorsed Kamala Harris for president and donated $7 million to her campaign. The cancellation rate almost tripled in the United States according to researcher Antenna.

Hastings, a longtime Democratic donor, endorsed Harris in a post on social media platform X on July 22. A day later, Hastings told The Information that he donated $7 million to a pro-Harris super PAC. Shortly after Hastings’ endorsement, Donald Trump fans began urging people to leave the service.

Some posted photos showing they had closed their accounts along with the hashtag #CancelNetflix. Three days after the donation was made public, July 26 was the streaming company’s worst day for cancellations this year.

The company declined to comment and Hastings, who has always been civic-minded, did not respond to an interview request. However, his openness about his political support has been very public until recently, and Netflix has always tried to keep Hastings’ donations and politics separate from his business.

Entertainment companies have faced backlash after their executives took a stance on political issues, so following this backlash, it won’t take long to find out if this storm caused any short-term pain for Netflix, as It presents its financial results in mid-October.
