The fight of the year: Boxing legend Mike Tyson got back into the ring – and lost to YouTuber Jake Paul. The TV broadcast turned into a farce.

Update from November 16th, 9:12 a.m.: Many fans dragged themselves out of bed early on Saturday morning to see their idol Mike Tyson fight again. But the fight, which was proclaimed “boxing match of the year”, was a failure both in terms of sport and technology.

Because it wasn’t just 58-year-old Tyson who ended up on the losing side because he clearly lost the fight. Netflix didn’t cover itself with fame either. The streaming giant wanted to enter the live sports business with the fight staged as a huge show – but that went terribly wrong. The TV broadcast was anything but smooth, boxing fans around the world complained about non-functioning technology and poor picture quality.

For long stretches, users of the live stream didn’t see anything and their frustration was huge. And Netflix can safely chalk up its live sports debut as an own goal.

And in fact, at the weigh-in before the fight, sparks flew between the 58-year-old “Iron Mike” and his opponent, who was over 30 years younger. After Paul (99.8 kilograms) apparently stepped on the boxing legend’s foot, Tyson (105.7 kilograms) countered with a slap in the face. Afterwards, wild scenes took place: Tyson could only be held back from his bed with difficulty, Paul, on the other hand, shouted loudly: “Now it’s personal, he has to die.” So things should also get pretty serious in the ring.
