Netflix recently came under fire for the French film Cute (in English Cuties). The poster was widely criticized. This shows several scantily clad teenage girls in suggestive poses, just as in the film itself.
The streaming giant apologized, but still asked for a boycott of Netflix and even the hashtags #DeleteNetflix and #CancelNetflix were circulated in America. Now a Netflix spokesperson is responding.
According to the spokesperson, the film is just like an indictment against treating young children as an object of lust: ”Mignonnes is an award-winning film that tells a powerful story of the pressures young girls face on social media and in society”.
Director
The director of the film, Maïmouna Doucouré, (who recently won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at the Sundance Film Fetival) also commented: ”I realize that most people who are outraged have not seen the film yet. The poster was wrong, but Netflix apologized for that to both the public and myself”.
”I hope the same people will watch the movie now that it’s out. Can’t wait to see their reaction when they realize we are all on the same side in the fight against treating young children as objects of lust”.
