Companies are currently releasing their second quarter financial results. They have been successful for video streaming giant Netflix, adding nearly 6 million new subscribers and earning $8.2 billion. To make these data even more positive, the company has started to rely more on revenue from advertisements, using its new subscription plan “Basic with Ads”, which is currently not available in Latvia. This is proven by the fact that “Netflix” in the US and UK is starting to remove the cheapest ad-free subscription plan – “Basic”.
The first news that Netflix wanted to remove the Basic plan came in late June, when the company stopped offering it to users in Canada. Realizing that this is apparently the right move, the subscription plan will soon be discontinued in the US and UK as well. Netflix has updated its subscription and pricing page to say that new and returning subscribers in the US and UK will no longer be able to sign up for the Basic plan. Meanwhile, those currently using Basic will be able to use it for a while longer.
If users do not want to put up with advertisements offered by “Basic with Ads”, they can choose the “Standard” subscription plan, which costs 9.99 eur, or 2 eur more than the “Basic” plan. “Standard” offers to watch content on two devices at the same time in Full HD quality. It is also possible to download content to watch offline, as well as add additional participants. True, “Basic with Ads” also offers to watch content on two devices at the same time in Full HD quality, but in addition to that, users have to put up with several 15-30 second long ads per hour, which, of course, cannot be skipped.
