Netflix Releases ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report’ with Historic Viewing Numbers

After years of secrecy and a first opening in 2021 with the publication of the top ten, Netflix arrives at what Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defines in a remote press conference as “a milestone for our industry” and announces that from today the numbers of the titles with the most hours of global viewing will be released.

The ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report’ is not intended as a ranking, given that it mixes films and TV series, but as a complete report (which will be published twice a year) on what people have chosen on Netflix over a six-month period. The first report, for the period from January to June 2023 “covers more than 18,000 titles representing 99% of all views on Netflix and almost 100 billion hours of viewing” explained the Vice President of Strategy and Analysis, Lauren Smith. The report for Lauren Smith, reflects the variety of tastes of the Netflix audience and also testifies to “the popularity of non-English-language titles which make up 30% of our viewing in the first half of the year”. Netflix’s decision “has historic significance and paves the way for awareness and transparency” commented the Undersecretary of Culture Lucia Borgonzoni in a note.

At the top of the report’s list is the first season of the spy thriller series The Night Agent (starring Gabriel Basso) with 812 million 100 thousand hours of global viewing in the first six months of the year. In second place was season 2 of the family dramedy series Ginny & Georgia with 665 million and 100 thousand hours of viewing (it also returned to ninth place with the first season); The South Korean revenge series The Glory is third. The first Italian series present is Lidia Poet’s Law: Season 1 with Matilda De Angelis (127th place). The Italian film with the most hours of viewing is My Name is Vengeance by Cosimo Gomez with Alessandro Gassmann (579th place). Among the other Italian series there is Mare Fuori (which however is not indicated among the titles available globally) with the first season (599th place) and the second (600th place), while among the films, there is among others, It was time by Edoardo Leo (605th place).
