The emblematic Argentine comic strip The Eternautcreated by Hector German Oesterheld y Francisco Solano Lopezwill finally have its first audiovisual adaptation in 2025, by Netflix. With Bruno Stagnaro as director and a script written in conjunction with Ariel Staltari, this series promises to revive the legacy of a fundamental work of Argentine culture.
Produced by K&S Filmsthe series will feature a luxury cast headed by Ricardo Darin in the role of Juan Salvo, accompanied by Carla Peterson, César Troncoso and Andrea Pietra, among others. Throughout six episodes, the characters must survive a deadly snowfall that devastates humanity, while facing an extraterrestrial threat that plagues Buenos Aires, faithful to the original setting of the comic.
One of the highlights of this production is the participation of Martin M. Oesterheldthe creator’s grandson, as creative consultant, ensuring that the adaptation maintains the essence of the original work. Among the names behind the cameras are key figures such as Hugo Sigman and Matías Mosteirin, who have announced that the series will be a faithful and modern tribute to the comic.
First published in 1957, The Eternaut is a landmark of Argentine science fiction. Through the story of Juan Salvo and his group of friends, Oesterheld constructed a story that has endured for its oppressive atmosphere, its social criticism and its particular setting in a Buenos Aires that becomes another protagonist. The plot explores collective resistance against unknown forces, standing out for its “common” characters facing an extraordinary destiny.
Over time, the work has been reinterpreted and reinterpreted on multiple occasions, partly thanks to Oesterheld’s tragic personal story, who disappeared during the military dictatorship in Argentina.
