Netflix gained 2.2 million new subscribers in the past quarter. That is considerably less than more than 25 million subscribers that the streaming service gained in the first two quarters of this year. According to Netflix, the smaller growth was expected and is due to the success in the first half of this year.
Netflix announced the third-quarter figures in a Tuesday evening message to the shareholders. The American company was counting on 2.5 million new customers in the third quarter, but that number decreased considerably.
Netflix did expect the number of new subscribers to lag far behind the ten million subscribers that the service was able to add in the second quarter and the record number of subscribers (fifteen million) that the company gained in the first quarter. The record growth was mainly due to the corona measures, which forced many people to stay at home and increased the demand for streaming services.
People who would have planned to subscribe in the second half of this year have done so before, according to Netflix because of the corona crisis.
Nevertheless, more Netflix subscriptions were taken out in the first nine months of this year than in the whole of 2019: 28.1 million, compared to 27.8 million. Sales were more than 22 percent higher than a year earlier and amounted to 6.4 billion dollars. Net profit rose to $ 790 million.
Netflix expects to attract slightly more subscribers in the fourth quarter. The streaming service will then target six million new paying customers. In total, more than 195 million people worldwide now have a subscription to Netflix.
