Netflix: Queen Sono, our first impressions of the 100% African action series

Spread the word ! Queen Sono is definitely part of the series to watch this month! The action series carried by the wonderful Pearl Thusi ((Quantico) definitely worth a visit. Indeed, after watching the trailer for Queen Solo, the first original African series produced by Netflix, we couldn’t help but binge-watcher all the episodes. And for good reason ! The plot, which takes place mainly in South Africa, sees a young talented spy but a bit daredevil find herself at the heart of a large-scale corruption investigation on the African continent. A mission which over the episodes, will prove to be much more dangerous than anything that the young woman, however reckless, has known before. Not to mention that the latter, eaten away by the early death of her mother, must also face her oldest enemy: herself.

Queen Solo, it is above all the baby of Kagiso Lediga (Catching Feelings). Because, the young man with multiple caps is the creator, the co-scriptwriter, the director and even the co-producer of the show! A hard worker therefore who offers serivores a little scenic gem. And if the first episode did not fail to convince us. The latter, tending to resemble the bad American action movies of the 90s. The rest of the series meanwhile turned out to be very promising! And for good reason from there, finished the clichéd and redundant action scenes. The clearly too show-off side gives way to a deep and much better worked intrigue. Thus revealing all the complexity of the main characters.

Through Queen Solo, Kagiso Lediga retraces the major transversal problems plaguing African countries. Namely, corruption within large institutions, abuse of power, segregation and especially the plunder of the wealth of the Continent by Western countries. An intrigue perfectly modeled on current events therefore and which here offers a breath of fresh air. Because Queen Solo beware of falling into a sectarian duality. Here, each character has their share of light and shade. Everyone can be both the good and the bad of the story. An interesting concept that promises many twists and turns in the future to come! Not to mention that with the presence of Chi Mhende (Homeland season 4) in the badass role of the director general of the SOG, Queen Solo offers the public a clearly feminist series. In two words: we love it! Until season 2, also discover the other series to watch on Netflix in March.
