Netflix Negotiating with Rockstar and Take-Two for Grand Theft Auto Game Development: What It Means for the Streaming Giant’s Expansion into Gaming

The streaming giant Netflix was said to be negotiating with the Rockstar studio and Take-Two Interactive for a license for the Grand Theft Auto brand. However, not for the purpose of making a film or own series, but for the possible development of another game. A letter came with the information The Wall Street Journaland while it doesn’t provide many details, it makes it pretty clear how serious Netflix is about games and what it’s willing to invest in.

If we consider what games Netflix offers, at least for now, they are mobile titles or mobile ports of mostly indie titles. Even so, the offer for existing subscribers of the service on mobile devices is quite diverse, and in the past the management of Netflix has already made it known several times that they want to expand activities in this field. However, few expected that by expanding games to TV screens as previously announced, Netflix could point to a possible entry into the competitive waters of Sony or Microsoft and tried to take a bite out of the pie of “big” games. This could happen through GTA, which Netflix is supposed to be after and for this purpose should have already negotiated a license.

How the negotiations turned out, whether they are still ongoing and what exactly could come out of mutual cooperation, we can only speculate for now. But it is very likely that it would naturally not be another big part, but a smaller and probably still mobile game, which would undoubtedly attract a famous brand beyond its own gameplay. This is how Netflix proceeded, for example, with Stranger Things or Love is Blind, but in the case of games, something like this could be even better and much more interesting. Rockstar doesn’t let anyone into the series, so just the idea of having someone else work on the game is more than tempting. On the other hand, let’s be realistic, we wouldn’t be surprised if Take-Two rejected the license request.
