Netflix introduces spatial audio to all devices – Sound & Vision

Netflix has just announced that the streaming service will begin rolling out 3D audio, also called spatial audio, to parts of the product catalog.

Already last year, Netflix launched support for spatial audio for iPhone and iPad, but from now on, all types of devices will be able to play the cinematic audio format. The starting point is a new collaboration that Netflix has entered into with Sennheiser.

Thanks to Sennheiser’s so-called AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio technology, Netflix will in future be able to get ordinary stereo speakers to deliver a sound image that will be close to real surround sound.

AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio works by retrieving information from the surround sound or Dolby Atmos audio track available for the selected content and mixing it into the stereo sound to create a 3D-like sound image.

To find content on Netflix that supports the new audio experience, you only need to type “spatial audio” in the search field on the Netflix app, and you will get a list of movies and series that can be viewed with 3D audio.

At the time of writing, this includes titles as the fourth season of Stranger Things, The Witcher, Red Notice and The Adam Project.

Spatial Audio will play automatically when you see the content that supports the format. And that no matter what subscription you have.
