Netflix introduces controversial fee for password sharing in Norway

The online newspaper: Netflix is sick of you borrowing your mom’s Netflix account instead of buying your own. Now they are introducing their controversial fee for customers who share passwords with someone outside their home in Norway as well.

The fee will cost an extra NOK 39 per month per person outside the home who borrows from the user. This appears from a message from the company this week.

John Inge Nordfonn doesn’t bother to pay. He is now canceling the family’s subscription.

– It was allowed to share an account with family and friends, so now having to pay extra for the same opportunity is wrong, he says to Nettavisen.

Until now, he has shared his account with his wife and two children. They are often on the move outside the home, and it will simply be too complicated with a joint subscription with the new fee, he fears.

– I think that these companies are only after money. Netflix has unfortunately just become too bad.

The fee has been announced for a long time. The electricity giant rolled out the fee in Spain in the new year. One million users disappeared during the first quarter.

Two-thirds of those injured are considered to be users who used other people’s passwords, according to research carried out by Kantar.

Flees: – Will lose many customers

Now several users in this country are also saying no thanks to Netflix after the news that the tax came.

“Then all you have to do is close the Netflix account”, writes one in the comments section under the case about the tax on Facebook.

“Netflix isn’t exactly the most special streaming service anymore. Many more who have newer films and series than what Netflix makes. Netflix has a sea of old movies. If they implement this, they will probably lose many customers,” writes another.

“It’s boring for us who can’t afford it. But at the same time, I understand that they lose a lot of money too. The alternative here will probably be to end Netflix, unfortunately,” writes a third.

Netflix: – Invests heavily in new films and TV programmes

Jalila Halvorsen Bouzaida, team leader and senior advisor for Netflix in Norway, refers to the email Netflix sent to all Norwegian customers to inform them about the fee.

Here it is stated, among other things, that Netflix “recognizes that our members have many entertainment options. That’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide range of new movies and TV shows.”

“Your Netflix account is for you and those you live with – your household. You can easily watch Netflix on the go and when you travel – whether on your personal device, on the TV in your hotel room or in a holiday home.”

Bouzaida also refers to his Netflix user support.
