Netflix Ends Ties with Apple’s App Store Billing System

Update Your Payment Method to Continue Accessing the Service

Netflix has recently made an important announcement that it will no longer allow subscribers to pay for their accounts through Apple’s App Store billing system. While new and rejoining subscribers haven’t been able to sign up with App Store billing since 2018, those who were already paying through Apple were allowed to continue doing so. However, now Netflix has informed these subscribers that they need to update their payment method in order to continue accessing the service.

This update was observed and reported by The Streamable. Netflix subscribers who pay for their subscription through Apple have also been notified regarding the need to add a new payment method to continue their subscription. Netflix’s support website has also been modified to include this change in the following statement: “Some Apple-billed members in select countries may be prompted to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.”

Although Netflix has not specified the countries to which this change applies, the update was made to its United States support website.

This decision signifies that Netflix has taken a definitive stance to move away from Apple’s App Store billing system altogether. By doing so, Netflix will no longer be required to pay a percentage of its revenue to Apple for subscribers paying through the App Store. The specific number of subscribers who still pay for their Netflix subscription through Apple’s App Store is unknown, but the assumption is that it is relatively low. After all, the option to pay through Apple’s system was removed for new and rejoining subscribers over five years ago.

If you are currently paying for your Netflix subscription through the App Store and have not been notified of this change, we would like to hear your feedback. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
