Netflix refuses to pay for the extra data traffic caused by the popularity of series such as Squid game. That was what a South Korean internet provider had demanded.

A Korean internet provider wants the streaming platform to pay Netflix a fee for the use of its network. The company believes that Netflix has to pay 27.2 billion won (about 20 million euros) for last year alone, local media report. That would be about 6 percent of the turnover of the Korean telecom company. That’s before Squid game was placed on the platform.
The direct financial impact of a network usage fee on Netflix is unclear. The company fears that that impact will grow exponentially and that internet providers worldwide will follow suit. Netflix does pay a fee in its US home market, but nowhere else. Korean content creators pay Korean telecom providers.
Squid game, a South Korean thriller about a group of people who play to the death children’s games, was watched by a record 142 million people on Netflix in the first four weeks after its premiere. After the series came to Netflix at the end of the third quarter, hype quickly arose.
