Netflix‘s ambitions in gaming are taking a hit. The multinational closed a studio which was to release an ambitious first game.
You may not know it, but your Netflix subscription allows you to download video games to your mobile device (there are even exclusives, like Monument Valley 3to be published in December). As an entertainment empire, the multinational must offer the most varied experiences possible. But the ambition is in reality much greater: Netflix hopes to eventually become a major player in gaming, by developing its own big games.

Netflix closes a studio that was working on an ambitious project
Before dissolving the structure, Netflix had nevertheless endeavored to recruit strong profiles to manage team Blue. For example, the company hired Chacko Sonny, producer ofOverwatch which has its name attached to Call of Duty and went through Sony Santa Monica (the God of War). In spring 2023, the team was strengthened by the arrival of Joseph Staten, a figure in the Halo saga within Bungie and then 343 Industries. At the time, the person concerned was happy to join Netflix to design “ a AAA multiplatform game and an original license “. Rafael Grassetti, former artistic director of God of War, also joined the project.
So many personalities likely to carry Netflix’s gaming ambitions and deliver a game capable of shaking up the market. They all ultimately left the firm, a spokesperson confirmed to Game File.
We remind you that Netflix is not the type to hesitate when it is necessary to abandon projects. The company has even become a specialist in this practice if we refer to the numerous canceled series (Kaosquite recently). It should also be remembered that Netflix has many other gaming studios that can do what team Blue was unable to achieve. This nevertheless remains a big setback in the diversification strategy, knowing that Netflix is unfortunately not the only multinational to go through this (for example, Meta closed Ready at Dawn a few months ago).
