A new security measure that Netflix calls for the time being could discourage the sharing of accounts between multiple users who do not live under the same roof.
In recent days, Netflix users who share the same account have been asked to verify their identity, having to enter a code sent by the American service on the phone of the person on whose name the account was created, News.ro reports
Netflix says it is a security measure designed to prevent unauthorized people from accessing an account that is not theirs. The explanation holds, however, only to a point: if it wanted to increase security, Netflix could have implemented 2FA authentication for all accounts.
The measure seems, rather, a first step towards discouraging the sharing of accounts. This is not a real obstacle, as the owner of the phone to which the verification codes are sent can send to those who are required by Netflix.
It is, however, a strong indication that Netflix is willing to take action. Account sharing has helped Netflix grow in popularity beyond the official number of subscribers, but after a point, the US company will want to monetize that popularity and become much more restrictive in this regard, hoping that those who can no longer share the same account will pay for your own account.
It is a situation very similar, to a large extent, to piracy. Piracy helped popularize Windows and was tolerated by Microsoft until it began to fight it to make those who had become accustomed to using the operating system pay for it.
Netflix, on the other hand, has to do this tactfully, because, unlike Microsoft, it operates in a market with strong competition, which can hardly wait to receive potential dissatisfied users. For a dissatisfied user, the path from a 12 euro Netflix subscription to a 12 lei Prime Video subscription can be very short.
