In 2019 the company Netflix Netflix in a letter to shareholders “We … advertise for free”.
That all changed on Thursday when the streaming pioneer launched “Basic with Ads,” the long-awaited ad-supported subscription option on the platform.
The new subscription will cost $ 6.99 per month in the US, where it is now available. It will also be launched in Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain and the UK, at different prices.
The company said “existing plans and members will not be affected,” and that the new “Basic with Ads” subscription plan complements “Basic, Standard, and Premium Ad-Free plans,” CNN reported.
The new subscription tier will include most of what’s available on the current Netflix Basic plan, which costs $ 9.99 per month. However, it will include an average of four to five minutes of advertising per hour. These ads will last 15 or 30 seconds and will be shown before and during the TV series and movies.
While most existing subscribers won’t see many changes unless you upgrade to the new plan, of course, the launch of the ads via Netflix marks one of the most significant moments in the company’s 25-year history.
