Netflix: 3 very good recent and successful series to see this weekend

New products are raining on Netflix, It’s the least we can say. Each month, the streaming by subscription (SVoD) adds many new series (and films) to its already full catalog.

At CNET France, we are used to scrutinizing these additions and watch the most promising programs, but not only. Some delight, others disappoint, and there are also good surprises. Dead to me, Gears and I Am Not Okay With This… this week we have compiled three recent and very satisfying series from the Netflix catalog.

What quality series to watch this weekend on Netflix?

A sympathetic black comedy: Dead to Me Locke & Key
(2020) on IMDb 8.1/ 10

Synopsis

When Jen Harding lost her husband in a road accident, his life turned upside down. The widow finds it very difficult to grieve, sadness and anger invade her and threaten to make her sink. It is urgent, she must take control of her life to avoid making the situation even more complicated.

In a therapy supposed to help her head out of the water, she meets the astonishing Judy. Very different, the two women will however quickly become friends. But what Jen doesn’t know is that Judy hides a heavy secret that concerns her directly …

Why it’s a good series

Dead to me was not a priority in the long list of programs we have to watch. Its first episode was launched without expecting much, even if the feedback on the program was generally very positive. First observation: these favorable returns are justified. Far from putting Dead to me aside after the first thirty minutes of show, we swallowed up his first season in one go.

It is a dark, funny and touching, sweet and bitter comedy carried by an excellent duo. Jen and Judy are perfect: they shine by their differences, but are also very accomplices on the screen. The improbable situations in which they find themselves are often funny and full of charm, even if Dead to me is less light than it suggested.

The series is simple, sometimes a little agreed, but its scenario reserves some nice surprises. The cliffhangers are numerous and the suspense rather well orchestrated, so that we quickly get caught up in the game. We also appreciate the finely chiseled dialogues that do not fall into the trap of banality.

The show is also not devoid of cynicism. Its intrigue is built on a lie and we do not see how it could end for the improbable duo of women. And yet, the twists and turns may surprise you … Anyway, Dead to me is a very nice series that we recommend without hesitation.

A breathtaking thriller: Dérapages Locke & Key
(2020) on IMDb 7.2/ 10

Synopsis

Former HRD laid off by his “too advanced” age, Alain Delambre is no longer able to cope. At the end of the line after years of odd jobs and galleys, he lost his nerves and violently his superior at the factory. Verdict: 100,000 euros in damages for those who are already struggling to repay all their loans.

Hope is finally reborn when he contacted for a position that perfectly matches his profile. To succeed and get the precious sesame, he is ready for anything and will stop at nothing, even when confronted with strange methods of recruitment. Then begins a series of unfortunate events and the apotheosis of the descent into hell of a man who has nothing more to lose.

Why it’s a good series

Freshly posted on Netflix, Slippage is a series that has the merit of intriguing. Its casting already, with Éric Cantona and Alex Lutz at the head of poster, has what to arouse the curiosity of the seriesphiles, always in search of a new nugget to put in the tooth.

His intrigue then, well thought out and smoothly conducted during the six episodes, is inspired by Black frames (Pierre Lemaitre’s excellent thriller), without distorting it or copying it too closely. Sometimes it’s true, the whole thing lacks a bit of relief, the script has a few empty passages and the conclusion could have been more successful.

However, this does not prevent Slippage to return a copy of a good invoice. Against the backdrop of social misery and despair, she recounts with subtlety and grips the infernal spiral in which Alain Delambre embarks.

His only crime? To have suffered too long a life that gave him no gift. So inevitably, when a big company led by a boss with dubious morals makes him dangle an unexpected job, he dives, without suspecting that he is in fact only a pawn.

But that the fall will be hard when he realizes the deception. Slippage focuses on the psychology of the character, the accumulation of insults that will make him crack. Unemployment wreaks havoc, like despair and resignation. This is what the series shows through its main character. Torn between his own darkness and the dilettante hope of a better world, he fights body and soul for his salvation.

The narration of this thriller social is intense, the staging sober but largely sufficient to install a heavy atmosphere. In the main role, Éric Cantona is solid. We are not always rave about his performances as actors, but in Slippage, it does a really good job.

Alex Lutz does not disappoint either, the features of the shark Alexandre Dorfmann suit him. Slippage is a nice surprise and a series that should keep you going.

A good atypical series: I Am Not Okay With This Locke & Key
(2020) on IMDb 7.6/ 10

Synopsis

Sydney is a special teenager, even if she doesn’t know it yet. For now, she has to reconcile a family life that is not always easy with her daily life in high school, her chaotic love stories and other first emotions. But that’s not all, the young woman also has amazing powers that lie dormant in her …

Why it’s a good series

An intriguing and amazing series, in line with the very successful The End of The F *** ing World. With just seven twenty-minute episodes, I Am Not Okay With This is choosing an increasingly rare format in the world of series. Obviously, it’s a bit too short for our taste, even if the series unfolds its story quietly, without taking too many shortcuts.

The adaptation of Charles Forsman’s comics is well done, his world is interesting and well constructed. The first season sets the scene and the atmosphere before a season 2 which will not be too much. Even if the first seven episodes are successful, they resonate first as an introduction and give hope for good things for the future.

The idea is good, the scenario taking, the characters rather endearing on the whole, but we are still a little on our hunger. The viewing leaves a little taste of unfinished business. Nothing dramatic, but a little more action and twists would not have been too much at times.

On the other hand, the series has the merit of approaching subjects which will echo the concerns of many adolescents. The heroine asks existential questions about her life, her loves, her sexuality … so many themes developed in the secondary intrigues of the show.

Other, I Am Not Okay With This has the merit of being original and entertaining. The actors are also friendly and deliver a more than correct service. The series has potential and if season 2 confirms the promises of the premiere, it should make a noticeable comeback on Netflix.
