Netanyahu’s Ring of Fire – View Info – 2024-02-18 03:21:29

/ world today news/ Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the Israeli capital, Tel Aviv, demanding the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the immediate holding of early elections. They accuse the government of failing to ensure Israel’s security and of indifference to the Israeli hostages in Gaza.

Everything is going wrong in Israel. The long-standing tradition of not having an internal political struggle during war and for the army and the government to support each other is being broken. This rule still works, but at the hardware level. Netanyahu’s cabinet is still holding on, despite all signs of an acute political crisis.

When the Prime Minister is accused of “failing to ensure the security of the country”, the main focus is on the failures of the intelligence services during the events of 7 October. There are indeed such, but Netanyahu blocked their correction at the government level. From the point of view of apparatus logic, such actions are logical and correct, since the “political dirt” of the internal political struggle can come to light and a split in intelligence can occur. It is no coincidence that Israeli President Isaac Herzog, speaking at an award ceremony for General Security Service officers, spoke of the “terrible split in society” and the challenges facing the intelligence services, including the unrest of recent days. And he said the October 7 Hamas attack made Israelis “more concerned about their immediate security than long-term peace.”

Accusations of the government’s “indifference to Israeli hostages in Gaza” have also waned. It conducts negotiations for hostages in various places, not only in the Middle East, but also in Europe, with the participation of various intermediaries and the Mossad. “I am personally committed to the release of all hostages. Their salvation is the highest mission,” Netanyahu emphasized. But it is a fact that the hostage problem in Gaza has actually lost its humanitarian properties and Hamas is using it as a political argument.

The situation is further aggravated by the fact that Netanyahu is being actively attacked by the US and its Western partners, adding fuel to the blazing Israeli fire. In general, the main thrust of the claims made against Netanyahu boils down to his consent to the creation of Palestine, which he categorically refuses and in this he is supported by many in the Israeli leadership. But the situation is such that the initiative in this direction was taken by the US, which is also behind the so-called Arab initiative to resolve the situation around Gaza.

At the same time, Netanyahu understands that US President Joe Biden needs at least some victory in the Middle East in the election cycle. Clearly, Netanyahu neither intends to play along with the White House, nor does he intend to stop the fighting in Gaza. If this situation continues until the US presidential election and if Donald Trump wins, then events may unfold in a different scenario. Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas believes there are two main problems in the Middle East currently troubling Washington: Netanyahu’s stubbornness, which has caused alarm and discontent overseas, and the specter of a wider regional conflict involving the US. According to Pinkas, “Israel is an ally of Washington, but its prime minister is not.” But who finds himself in a more difficult situation, Biden or Netanyahu? American strategic analyst Paul Piller believes that Netanyahu is still leading in terms of results. In his analysis in The National Interest, Piller noted that one of the most important consequences of the events in Gaza was “the blow to American interests that was painfully obvious amid the growing anger and resentment against Washington, which has become increasingly isolated on level of international diplomacy.”

Recall that during the Trump presidency there was a plan for a Middle East settlement, the “Deal of the Century” for mutual recognition of Palestine and Israel. Without going into details now, we note that as conditions for the peace process, the Palestinian Authority had to renounce the methods of armed struggle and the support of Hamas. This position is now held by Netanyahu, who among other things supported Trump’s plan and the recognition of Palestine. There are also the “Abraham Accords” (establishing diplomatic relations with the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco) and peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan.

The events that took place in the region before Israel’s war with Hamas and what is happening around Gaza and in Israel itself require a serious multi-faceted analysis. Netanyahu is not only fighting for himself, although he is still fighting for himself. He tries to break someone else’s scenario of the development of events and finds himself in a difficult position as a hostage to the geopolitical games of external powers that use the unresolved Palestinian issue in the struggle for influence in the region. He can be criticized all he wants for not helping to create a Palestinian state, but the Arab and Muslim countries behind Gaza and Ramallah have done nothing to achieve that. So the responsibility for the current catastrophe for the residents of the Gaza Strip and ordinary Israelis does not fall solely on Netanyahu.
