(CNN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on the 6th that the Palestinian Authority will no longer govern the Gaza Strip while he is prime minister. The remarks highlighted the difference in the positions of Israel and the US government regarding the governance of Gaza after the end of the war with the Islamic group Hamas.

“This will not happen as long as I am prime minister,” Netanyahu said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). No one can rule Gaza after the eradication of Hamas.”

Prior to Netanyahu’s remarks, Sky News Arabia reported on the 6th that Palestinian Authority Chairman Abbas had announced his intention to assume power in Gaza and the West Bank.

U.S. President Biden announced last month that he believes Gaza and the West Bank should be ruled by the Palestinian Authority after the war ends. In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Biden said that if peace is to be achieved, Gaza and the West Bank should be reunited under a single governing structure and, ultimately, revitalized. He said that everyone should work toward a two-state solution under the Palestinian Authority.

However, Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea of the Palestinian Authority governing Gaza.
