IsraelPrime Minister Netanyahu said on the 18th that he had informed the United States that he opposed the establishment of aPalestineand refused to reduce the scale of the current war in Gaza. His remarks immediately triggered a backlash from the White House.
The BBC reported that Netanyahu vowed at a press conference to continue the offensive in Gaza until he achieved “complete victory” and would destroyHamasand recovered the remaining Israeli hostages, but added that this might take “more time.”
Israel’s allies, including the United States, have urged Israel to resume the long-stalled two-state solution, including a future Palestinian state that would coexist with Israel.
But Netanyahu said that as prime minister he needed to be able to say no to allies, emphasizing that in any future arrangement, Israel must ensure secure control of all land west of the Jordan River, which conflicts with the idea of Palestinian sovereignty.
White House National Security Advisor Kirby said in response that the U.S. government will not stop working hard to implement the two-state solution, emphasizing that it “will not reoccupy Gaza.”
US State Department spokesman Miller also said that if Palestine does not establish a state, it will not bring sufficient security to Israel in the long run, and there will be no way to rebuild Gaza, establish governance in Gaza, and provide local security in the short term.
The White House has repeatedly tried to influence Israeli military policy, including urging the use of more precision-guided weapons rather than all-out airstrikes; blocking a ground offensive; and calling for a two-state solution that would have allowed the Palestinian autonomous government to take over Gaza after the conflict.
But Washington’s suggestions have often been ignored or rejected, fueling dissatisfaction within the United States over the Biden administration’s apparent full support for Israel and strong calls for the United States to impose conditions on its aid to Israel.
