The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezbelieves that the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahuand its Executive are increasingly isolated internationally due to the strategy they apply in their war against the Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip for six months.
“I believe that Netanyahu and his government, with this strategy, are increasingly isolated internationally”he noted in an interview broadcast this Thursday on the Qatari channel Al Jazeerawhich he recorded during his visit in Doha this week as part of his latest tour Near Eastwhich also led him to Jordan y Saudi Arabia.
Sánchez stressed that “at the beginning” everyone felt “solidarity with the citizens and the society that was attacked by a terrorist organization”, in reference to the attacks that Hamas launched on October 7 against Israeli territory and that ended the lives of 1,200 people.
“But after this unbalanced and horrible situation that attracted the entire international community, Prime Minister Netanyahu is being put in a very difficult and isolated situation within the traditional community”said regarding the death of more than 33,000 civilians in the Palestinian enclave as a result of the attacks by the Israeli Army.
As an example, he noted that “in Europe, at the beginning of the war, some countries more aligned with Israel’s political position today have changed their positions” due to everything that is happening in Gaza.
During the interview, Sánchez affirmed that all citizens are committed to peace and, therefore, reiterated the “need to reach an urgent and permanent ceasefire on the ground,” while recalling that the resolutions of the Security Council of the The United Nations is mandatory for “all member states and also for Israel.”
Along these lines, he stated that “there must always be responsibility” for the acts committed during a war conflict, especially against the civilian population, and asked the Israeli government to “comply with what is binding today, which are, of course, UN resolutions demanding a permanent ceasefire.
Likewise, he pointed out that both the Irish and Spanish governments asked the European Comission to make an evaluation of the humanitarian norms and the articles that are included in the strategic relationship that the European Union has with Israel to value the maintenance of this relationship.
Sánchez reiterated his intention to call a peace conference and make effective the recognition of the State of Palestine, which he will also support for its inclusion as a member of the UN, although he stated that there must be “a push for mutual recognition (…); “Some Arab countries also have to recognize Israel to be able to have that peaceful coexistence.”
Furthermore, he showed his support for the Palestinian Authority to take the reins of the Palestinian territories (Gaza, Jerusalem and the West Bank “from the Spanish perspective”) once the conflict is over, despite the fact that “Netanyahu has been trying to weaken the Palestinian Authority in recent years.”
Finally, when asked about his relationship with the United States, he opted to maintain “excellent relations with the president.” Biden and his administration” and stated that he would like to see him re-elected president of the United States, “but this is something that American citizens must respond to.” EFE (I)
