Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government had not even responded to the proposal, and instead ordered the army to continue fighting with full force against Hezbollah.

Even though the White House said the truce offer was coordinated with Israel before it was announced.

“The statement was coordinated by Israel. We felt comfortable releasing it last night,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz previously said that Netanyahu and several ministers who support him had been briefed on the proposal from time to time, and had given their “blessing”.

But while on his way to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu changed his position in response to sharp criticism from several ministers in Israel’s own cabinet.

The three prime ministers in Netanyahu’s coalition government have publicly opposed the ceasefire proposal.

Israel’s Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, said that the only way is to continue the war against Hezbollah.

“The attack in the north must end with one result: destroying Hezbollah and eliminating its ability to harm civilians. [Israel] in the north,” said Smotrich.

The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, even threatened to boycott cabinet activities if the Netanyahu government agreed to the truce. Ben Gvir also threatened to resign completely from the government.

“The most basic and obvious thing is that when your enemies fall to their knees, you don’t let them get back up, but instead you defeat them and eliminate them,” said Ben Gvir.

In a separate statement, Israel’s Foreign Minister Katz also opposed ending the war against Hezbollah.

“There will be no ceasefire in the north. We will continue to fight against the terrorist group Hezbollah with all our strength until the victory is achieved and until we can for the residents of the north to return to their homes safely,” said Katz.
