Producer Nestlé has destroyed Perrier brand water bottles due to deteriorating water quality in one of its stores. The water from that source will no longer be used until further notice, Nestlé itself reports.
Subsidiary Nestlé Waters says “several hundred pallets” of bottled water have been destroyed as a precaution. The specific cause is “microbiological abnormalities in the store”. The anomaly in the Gard reservoir is the result of heavy rain in March, when storm Monica hit the south-east of France.
Nestlé Waters is therefore no longer using the store in Vergèze for some time. “Production will start at the appropriate time under the guidance of the authorities,” he said. Nestlé Waters does not consider the additional outcome for production. “Bottles that have been placed on the market can be safely consumed. “
Irradiation of water
French authorities have been closely monitoring the company, which also makes the Vittel, Contrex and Hépar water brands, since the end of January. Nestlé Waters then admitted that unauthorized treatments had been used to purify mineral water. This includes treatment with ultraviolet radiation and activated carbon, which is not allowed when using the designation “natural mineral water” or “spring water”.
