To date, there have been no commercial solutions to replace fossil fuels and reduce the high greenhouse gas emissions of conventional petrol-powered cars without investing in new cars or retrofitting old ones.

Although the share of electric cars is growing rapidly, the EU estimates that 60% of Europe’s car fleet in 2030 will be made up of cars with internal combustion engines. Therefore, solutions are needed to reduce emissions in the transport sector. Liquid biofuels, combined with electrification, biogas, hydrogen and changes in consumer behavior, will play an important role in reducing emissions from the transport sector.

A final testing phase is now underway to complete commercial tests of the fuel, providing essential and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars equipped with hybrid engines.
The European Union (ES) recently raised its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to at least 55% by 2030. Ambitious national targets have also been set, for example in Sweden and Finland, including separate emission reduction mandates for petrol engine emissions. However, currently available alternatives to petrol-powered cars do not lead to a significant reduction in fossil petrol use in a sufficiently short time.
Steps are being taken to address these challenges: Neste’s renewable petrol can reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% compared to fossil fuels. Neste aims to improve this figure by gradually achieving a 90% reduction in emissions through fuel use. This would mean that life cycle greenhouse gas emissions would be equivalent to those of electric cars.

The product complies with the EN228 standard and can be used in both existing and new cars equipped with petrol and hybrid engines. Renewable petrol is thus able to provide another tool in the EU to meet the ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
Tests on the new fuel are being carried out in conjunction with “Volvo Cars’ supplier Powertrain Engineering Sweden AB, which supplies propulsion and next-generation hybrid systems to Volvo Cars and other manufacturers, is currently evaluating Neste’s renewable gasoline.
“We are following the development of renewable fuels, including Neste renewable petrol, with great interest and believe that it has great potential. The combination of our products with Neste renewable petrol will allow car owners to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65%.” says Michael Fleiss, head of Powertrain Engineering Sweden.
The testing is performed both in the laboratory with the engine idling and with Neste on test drives with two cars. The purpose of these tests is to investigate the properties of the fuel and make adjustments to further reduce emissions before commercial trials begin. Neste plans to evaluate the results in the coming months.
