PRIANGAN ZONE – Scientists are developing implant flexible which can relieve pain in patients. That said, this is an invention that can change the current habit, where implant it is water soluble and biocompatible which can serve as an alternative drug pain reliever, which is definitely not needed anymore drug–drug which makes users dependent.
The way it works is by wrapping the nerves to provide cooling in the area, implant can numb nerves and block pain signals to the brain, thereby relieving pain. User can activate implant through an external pump, while controlling the intensity of the cooling effect.
“As engineers, we are motivated by the idea of treating pain without drug – in a way that can be turned on and off instantly, with user control over the intensity of the relief,” said John A. Rogers, a professor at Northwestern University and author of the new study published in Science.

“The technology reported here exploits a mechanism that has some similarities to that which causes your finger to go numb when cold. Our implant allows that effect to be produced in a programmable manner, directly and locally to the targeted nerves, even those deep in the surrounding soft tissue.”
Developed by a research team led by Northwestern University, the device works on the principle of simple evaporation. It contains a cooling fluid that acts on specific locations on the nerves, thereby numbing the pain.
“As you cool the nerves, the signals traveling through the nerves become slower and eventually stop completely,” explains study co-author Dr Matthew MacEwan. He explained that the device targets the peripheral nerves that are responsible for communicating sensory stimuli to the brain including pain.

While cooling can prove to be a much-needed relief for patients, on the other hand, Rogers warns that excessive cooling can damage nerves and the fragile tissues around them.
