GORAJUARA – Triton is the largest of Neptune’s 13 moons, being the only large moon in the solar system that orbits in the opposite direction to the planet’s rotation, a Retrograde orbit.
Scientists once thought that Triton was a Kuiper Belt object that was captured by Neptune’s gravity millions of years ago.
Reported from the science.nasa.gov site by GORAJUARA, Triton is the same as our moon, which is locked in synchronous rotation with Neptune, one side of which faces the planet at all times.
However, due to the unusual tilt of its orbit, the two polar regions alternately face the Sun.

Triton has a diameter of 2,700 km with a sparsely cratered surface with fine volcanic plains, mounds and round holes formed by icy lava flows.
Triton consists of a crust of frozen nitrogen over an icy mantle that is believed to cover a core of rock and metal and also has the density of water.
This density is higher than the density measured on almost all other satellites of the outer planets.

Triton is hinted to contain more rock in its interior than the icy satellites of Saturn and Uranus.
Triton’s thin atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen and small amounts of methane which likely originates from volcanic activity driven by the Sun’s seasonal heating.
Triton, Uranus and Venus are the only bodies in the solar system besides Earth that are known to be volcanically active.

Triton is one of the coolest objects in the solar system, where its temperature is so cold that most of the nitrogen there condenses into frost.
