Until now, it was called by the temporary code given to it at the time of its discovery, “S/2004 N 1.” In accordance with the rules established by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), it is named after Hippocampus, a mythical half-horse, half-fish creature from Greek mythology (Wikipedia).

Hippocamp was not discovered when Voyager 2 approached Neptune in August 1989, but 24 years later, in July 2013, 150 images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope between 2004 and 2009 were discovered. It was discovered by Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute, who was looking at images over . Therefore, the temporary code includes the year “2004”.
