Neptune Rings: Composition, Discovery, and Interesting Facts

KOMPAS.com – Neptune is one of four planets in the Solar System that have rings. Neptune was only discovered in 1846 and its rings were only discovered for certain in 1989 by the Voyager 2 probe.

In fact, Neptune’s first ring was discovered in 1968, but scientists were unable to determine whether it was a complete ring.

What are Neptune rings made of?

Neptune has five rings, namely Galle, Le Verrier, Lassell, Arago, and Adams. The rings are named after astronomers who made important discoveries regarding this planet.

Neptune’s rings consist of at least 20% dust and some rings contain as much as 70% dust. Meanwhile, the remaining materials that make up Neptune’s rings are small rocks.

Neptune’s rings are difficult to see because they are dark and vary in density and size. Astronomers think Neptune’s rings are younger than the planet’s age, and were likely formed when one of Neptune’s moons was destroyed.

Neptune’s innermost ring orbits at a distance of 41,000 km from the planet, and is up to 2,000 km wide.

Planet Neptune Facts

Here are other facts about the planet Neptune that are interesting to know:

1. The planet Neptune has an orbital period of 164.79 years.

2. Neptune has circled the Sun only once since it was first discovered in 1846.

3. The average distance of the planet Neptune from the Sun is estimated to be 4,498,250,000 km.

4. Neptune’s axis of rotation points to the plane of its orbit at 29.6°, somewhat greater than Earth’s 23.4°.

5. Neptune’s axial tilt causes the seasons to change and because of the circularity of its orbit, Neptune has very long seasons, each lasting almost 41 years.

6. Neptune’s rotation period is 16.11 hours.

7. The equatorial diameter of Neptune measured at a pressure level of one bar is 49,528 km.
