- sorae – Clear images of Neptune’s rings James Webb Space Telescope
This was introduced by sorae in the article on September 24, 2022.Neptune and its moon Triton captured by the James Webb Space Telescope“is. Webb’s near-infrared camera “NIRCam” was used for the photography.
What shines particularly brightly is Neptune’s largest moon, Triton. According to NASA, Triton, whose surface is covered in condensed nitrogen ice, reflects an average of 70 percent of the sunlight that hits it. Therefore, compared to Neptune, which appears darker due to methane’s strong absorption of near-infrared rays, Triton appears much brighter in this image.
Also, the reason why Neptune’s color is different from what we normally see is because the Webb Space Telescope mainly observes at infrared wavelengths. Because the human eye cannot see infrared light, this image is colored red, green, orange, and blue, depending on the four types of filters used to capture it.
The image below is a wide-area image around Neptune with annotations added, and shows six satellites in addition to Triton.
