Nepal’s parliament dissolved; Interim election announced | World | Deshabhimani

Kathmandu
Nepal dissolves parliament, announces by-elections Elections will be held in two phases on April 30 and May 10. On the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, President Bidhyadevi Bhandarian dissolved the House of Representatives, the lower house of Parliament. The 275-member assembly, which has a five-year term, was elected in 2017.

The decision to dissolve the parliament was taken at an emergency cabinet meeting held at Oli’s house on Sunday morning. Seven former Maoist ministers of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (NCP) have resigned in protest. It was in February 2018 that Oli was elected Prime Minister for the second time. Oli is also the NCP president.

The CPN (United Marxist-Leninist) led by Oli and the CPN (Maoist Center) led by former Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal (Prachanda) merged to form the NCP in May 2018. But differences persisted. Recently, the NCP has been at loggerheads with India over issues including the border dispute.

NCP co-chair Prachanda, party leaders and former prime ministers Jholanath Kanal and Madhav Kumar Nepal have criticized the dissolution of parliament. Opposition Nepali Congress has also been criticized. Party spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the NCP standing committee would meet to discuss the issue. It is reported that Prachanda had reached Oli’s residence in the morning but returned missing.
