Nepal is facing an even bigger Covid-19 disaster than India / Article

Nepal, like neighboring India, may soon experience an even more severe Covid-19 crisis. One month ago, only about 100 cases of coronavirus were registered in Nepal a day, but now that number is over 8,600.

44% of Covid-19 tests performed last weekend were positive, and the percentage of infections could be twice as high as in India.

“What is happening in India is a frightening prospect for Nepal’s future if we fail to contain this wave of Covid-19, which is demanding more and more victims,” said Netra Prasad Timsina, Nepal’s Red Cross leader.

Experts attribute the current rapid outbreak to a number of religious festivals in April, as well as the relatively free border with neighboring India.

According to the Nepalese Red Cross, if decisive steps are not taken to contain the virus, Nepal will soon face the same, if not more, crisis than India. Hospitals are already overcrowded, the number of doctors is lower than in India, and vaccination rates are lagging far behind the neighboring country. Nepal has an average of only 0.7 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants.

As the situation worsens, however, the government has begun to restrict cross-border movement, ordered supplies of medical oxygen, and ordered the army to begin expanding hospitals.
